Orchestra Lagrandt - The World Of Yesterday

Orchestra Lagrandt ventures into the 20th century with “The World of Yesterday”, featuring masterpieces such as Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, and Britten’s “Les Illuminations” with returning soloist Ambro Golachowski. Each of the works on this program reflects a different school of composition from the turn of the century - from late Romanticism to Impressionism and Neoclassicism. Following the First World War, the style of classical music performance began to shift from one that valued individuality to one of standardized interpretations. String players phased out their gut strings and portamenti for steel strings and vibrato, ideas surrounding intonation changed, and orchestras shifted yet further towards sleek precision and perfection. As a historical performance orchestra, Lagrandt will trace those changing artistic aesthetics that accompanied the dusk of Romanticism to the dawn of Modernism.

Antwerp Symphony Orchestra

After his brilliant performance at the Cathedral Concert in June 2024, conductor Jan Söderblom returns to the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. Together with pianist Alexander Melnikov, he promises fireworks in Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto. This youthful work, later revised by the composer, dazzles with grand Romantic gestures and virtuosic piano brilliance. Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony keeps us in the high-Romantic spirit but takes us across the Atlantic. Amy Beach sought a distinct musical voice for the United States, much like Dvořák. Drawing on her English, Irish, and Scottish heritage, her symphony overflows with warmth and inviting melodies. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is delighted to share these captivating sounds with you.

A reimagined classic

Dutch National Ballet presents a grand, renewed production of La Bayadère. This vibrant adaptation preserves the enchanting dance jewels of Marius Petipa while drawing from a revised libretto that re-examines the historical context. Rachel Beaujean, Kalpana Raghuraman, Dr. Priya Srinivasan and Ted Brandsen have collaborated on a new storyline that moves away from the orientalist perspective of the original version. When Petipa created La Bayadère in 1877, he had never visited India. Although he consulted various sources, his production presented a fantasised image of an India perceived as exotic through Western eyes. Following extensive research, this new production rewrites the story with greater attention to its historical and cultural context.

Orchestra Lagrandt - Een romantische Johannespassion

When the Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach were revived during the 19th-century, musicians often took on the task of adapting them to fit contemporary tastes. The most famous example being Felix Mendelssohn and his 1829 revival of the Matthäus-Passion, which, in many ways, put Bach's music back on the map for the Romantics. In the Netherlands, the Passions were revived in the 1870s and have since become a celebrated cultural tradition during the Easter season. These performances explored changes to the instrumentation and performance style to expand the works in a grand context. In our own contribution to this powerful tradition, we are 'reviving' the Johannes-Passion in a late Romantic style with changes inspired by composers like Johannes Brahms and Gustav Mahler's fervent admiration for the music of J. S. Bach.

One of the biggest audience favourites, Ted Brandsen’s lively, passionate Carmen, returns to the stage. Alongside this dynamic narrative ballet, you’ll see Marius Petipa’s glittering Paquita, in an adaptation by Rachel Beaujean that lends fresh panache to the grandeur of this classic. Completing this programme is Hans van Manen’s fiery 5 Tangos, one of the master choreographer’s most frequently performed pieces worldwide.

Tobias Haug - Stringtet

Gegründet im Jahr 2025, vereint das „Tobias Haug Stringtet“ zehn junge, talentierte Musiker*innen in einer außergewöhnlichen Besetzung mit Saxophon, Oboe, fünf Streicher und Rhythmsection.

Das Repertoire besteht aus neu arrangierten Eigenkompositionen und Jazz-Standards. Inspiriert von der Klangwelt großer Broadway-Musicals bringt die Band neben Balladen auch schnelle Nummern mit auf die Bühne. Die stilistisch vielfältigen Arrangements sind genau auf die Besetzung zugeschnitten und bieten neben schönen Melodien auch viel Raum für Improvisationen.
